Best time to visit Japan: a month-by-month guide
Japan is one of the most searched destinations of 2026, and picking the right time to go can be the difference between seeing Kyoto under cherry blossoms or under umbrellas. This guide walks you through what to expect month by month so you can plan with no surprises.
When is the best time to visit Japan?
The two top seasons are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). In both, the weather is pleasant and the landscapes are at their peak: cherry blossoms in spring, red and gold leaves in fall. If you want fewer international tourists, January, February, and September tend to be the quietest months.
Spring in Japan (March to May)
Cherry blossoms: when and where
For 2026, the bloom forecasts are:
- Tokyo: flowering March 21, full bloom March 28
- Kyoto: flowering from March 25, peak April 2
- Osaka: full bloom around April 1
- Nagoya: flowering March 21, peak March 30
Tip: cherry blossoms only last 1 to 2 weeks in full bloom. Book several months ahead because flights and hotels fill up fast.
Watch out for Golden Week
In 2026, Golden Week runs roughly from April 29 to May 6. It is the most important holiday stretch in Japan. If it is your first trip, plan before (mid April) or after (mid May).
May: the underrated month
Late May is one of the best moments of the year: comfortable temperatures, low humidity, and more reasonable prices than peak cherry blossom season.
Summer in Japan (June to August)
Summer is hot and humid: temperatures regularly above 30 °C are common. But it is also festival season, with the Gion Matsuri in Kyoto (July), one of the country most famous festivals, plus fireworks (hanabi) festivals across the country.
Tip: pack light clothes, sunscreen, and a reusable bottle. Staying hydrated is key.
Autumn in Japan (September to November)
October is widely considered one of the best months to visit Japan: landscapes fill with red, orange, and gold tones. For fall foliage and pleasant weather, are the safe pick. September can still be hot and overlap with typhoon season, but tends to be quieter for international tourism.
